That's the real hazard. WW I started because a bunch of complex alliances pulled many nations in to help their allies until there were two big coalitions. As the US and its allies struggle with Iran and its allies, even if both sides do not really want open 'war', there is a very real possibility of complex interconnections, technological and political, drawing more and more unexpected participants into the conflict. Iranian retaliation will probably be in the region to start with. They have much more capability close to home. But the tit-for-tat is likely to continue, and things could spread around the world.
