I had another thought. If you enjoy the turbulent 1600s in London I think you would really enjoy a BBC Radio programme, still available :- The Diary of Samuel Pepys with Kris Marshall. If you don't know him he was a Minister who wrote a very frank diary, he held nothing back. You will find accounts of the Plague, Great Fire of London, general life, the plays, including Shakespeare who he didn't seem to care for,even his mistresses.It's very funny.

Re the mix of tribes that make up England, there weren't that many people here to start with. I am sick and tired of the current fashion of insinuating that the English just went out and wrecked the world and the feminists whining on about downtrodden women. We always had traders and merchants coming here from all over the place, and many settled to learn our skills and teach us some. Then they intermarried. Jesus was even reputed to have come here with his uncle, Joseph of Arimathea, to the West Country tin mines.We also had sailors bringing home foreign wives and children.When the Romans came they too were from all over the Roman Empire. After, I think, about 6 years as a captured slave they were given their equality so they too settled and intermarried. Plenty were African or Middle Eastern. Again if you want to smile read the letters sent home by the Romans when they first invaded. They came in a freezing cold, non stop rain time, some committed suicide. They wrote home begging for knitted socks amongst other things.Some letters are in the museum at Bath. Any of the big ports had people of all origins living there for centuries.Our history is also full of women of equal standing with men. Boadicea was fighting the Romans, and is still remembered. Many tribal leaders were women, here and in Ireland, some became Viking wives. We have had rich powerful females all the time. The Puritans have a lot to answer for.
About 30 years ago they reckoned the most original line of English were up on the Borders of Scotland.
