I think the Liesgang rings may be a dead end. I did some checking and from what I understand the Liesgang rings are merely bands of color, not physical bands of rock. It seems that they are merely from the seepage of iron into the rock which gives it a color dependant on the rock type. So that leads us back to the question of what process could cause the types of physical rings seen in this formation?
