That link had 41 other articles in the tread entitled "An Example of Spheroidal Weathering and Science Education "... There was quite a bit of information there about spheriodal weathering and Liesegang banding in those posts. That is the only link I now of that contains information about geological mechanism involved in the formation of this outcrop. Would you have prefer that I did not post it then all of that information would not initially have gotten to the original poster of this thread.

What the black layers in the photos... those look like Liesegang banding which form from host rock alteration from ground water interaction along joint planes.
