That human society has managed to socialize and institutionalize brutish, predatory dietary habits is certain. The underlying principle here, that of Continuous Progress being a Good Thing means that the author of the article believes that this society is the flower, the very crown of human "Development."
Ironically, perhaps it is one of the "stupidest" facets of life for the "stupid" caveman cited by John Anthony West in his brilliant characterization of the Progress theory: "We began as stupid cavemen and wound up as smart old us, with our hydrogen bombs and our striped toothpaste."
