Thanos' take on this concept is that the Renaissance is not the Roman Empire and that top notch quarrying and shaping of monolithic granite definitely was alive and well during the 1st century BC/AD, but then the civilization forgot the technology perhaps due to war and disease. According to that perspective, no records were kept, no secret tools were hidden by the "resistance", no neighboring country sussed it out and brought it back shortly after the downfall. Rather, the ENTIRE land mass of the Roman Empire including all of the Western world forgot what was arguably their most advanced stoneworking technology until the 18th century AD when the Western world rediscovered it.
How can any of us ever know, when all we can do is think?
