For what it's worth, I do not recall Petrie, Smyth, the Edgars or Rutherford every describing salt in the rafters. Smyth does describe the "black powder" in the first RC, but only mentions salt in the Grand Gallery and Queen's Chamber but not the rafters.
Perhaps it's possible that Vyse cleared out the salt deposits to clean up his "discovery"?
