It's a great question but my knowledge of such specifics is highly limited.
This is one of many questions that could possibly be answered by microscopic forensics since the salt would have probably been brushed off rather than washed off. I'd like to see all such questions addressed scientifically and methodically.
Perhaps someone else can answer it. So few things are well recorded and these sites have been disburbed virtually since the projects were complete. All details from before Herodotus appear to be lost and we don't even know for certain exactly when and if (how) the pyramid was stripped.
