It is quite strange to me how little attention the rest of the hieroglyphs get. You would have thought in the last 100+ years a project would have been completed by modern Egyptologists to accurately catalogue each of them but they don't seem interested. Even when they were "discovered" there was some controversy over them that doesn't seem to have ever been resolved, just eventually forgotten and accepted.

The use of the cartouche began in the 3rd Dynasty gaining wide use towards the end of the 4th Dynasty. Long before this time and after the serekh was used as well.
