Agreed.. although I am not an authority on ancient writing..
I do understand the processes that are involved in in mark making..
It seems like a simple idea but can be rather complicated. It's a Fine Art thing :)
Eyeofhorus and myself discussed this out in an earlier post.
If they were painted vertically and in situ by an AE then yes the individual characters would be as your first illustration.
If they were painted horizontally before the block was installed then they would appear as in your second illustration.
However there are a number of other factors that have previously been discussed that indicate the painting was done post block installation. In situ.
This would indicate that the painting is not AE and was done in situ.
There is more evidence to come but we are still working on it .
By the way are there any other examples of AE painted, not carved Quail???
