Hi Scott
I feel that they MAY have NOT been painted horizontally..
Because of the fortuitous positioning on the block rendering the writing totally visible after installation..
The Slant/lean of the individual characters when viewed horizontally..
The compression at the end of the writing.
The remarkable similarity, which you pointed out between Vyse's journal drawing . especially one of the "ducks, birds" or whatever they are..
(identical "signature")
An analyses of the individual strokes and style would require a lengthy report but I am sure you understand what I mean. But it can be done.
Artworks are verified in this way..
I think that it would be worth asking the opinion of an independent arts professional.
Yes they could have been painted in situ ..slanted.. vertically.. by a pyramid workman standing on one leg but why?/ when he has acres of virgin canvas to paint on.. horizontally..
Yes they could have been painted in the quarry.. survived undamaged all the way to the site and then the block was placed in such a way that the writing was not obscured.. Just got lucky..
