To which I might add that the source of this illustration, Wilkinson’s Manners and Customs, wasn’t published until late 1837. Short of a time machine, Vyse didn’t have it.
And Wilkinson didn’t twig that the thing in the “banner” was a name. He considered the idea, then rejected it. Vyse, we may note, was if anything overly respectful of Wilkinson’s opinion.
