This is not a question of taking Vyse’s word for it, no matter how much you repeat this tired old line.

Trust?

I trust the experts who consider these inscriptions genuine.

I trust John Shae Perring, a confident, self-respecting and independent-minded young man, profoundly unlikely to have gone along with any skulduggery.

I trust the openness displayed by Vyse himself, when he invited all and sundry to come and see his new discovery.

I trust the checks and balances imposed by so many people, previously unknown to Vyse, being involved.

I trust the checks and balances Vyse imposed on himself, by publishing while all of the principals were still alive.

I trust my own assessment of the state of knowledge in 1837, which makes the idea of the leading Egyptologists of the day knowing enough to fake these marks, risible.
