Temple cites an utterance from a pyramid text:

372: Horus takes him to his side, he purifies this Unas in the Jackal-lake (S zAb)

to suggest that the Sphinx was formerly carved in the likeness of Anubis, the Jackal-headed god, coupled with a proposal that the sphinx was surrounded by water. Hence the 'Jackal Lake' in Unas' PT is imbibed with a new meaning.

I am sure it will have been discussed on the board before but what are others' thoughts about Temple's theory of the sphinx surrounded by a moat filled with water? Does the geological evidence support such a theory?

:)
