There are Arab accounts of the Shamir or Shekinah associated with the Ark, it sat on the closed lid and formed what the biblical writers call the Mercy Seat. This device was said to be used in the 'silent' cutting of the stones for the Temple of solomon.
Indeed when one cuts stones with this device they do fracture virtually silently, in fact it is very difficult to hear the stones splitting. Likewise one does not hear the words being written in the stone.
