I used to consider history to be the least implausible explanation of past events but that was before I found the pyramids. Egyptology appears to be one less improbable explanations but so far removed from the realm of the possible as to make it improbable.
I'm a skeptic because in my experience most people don't understand the world they live in yet are quick to suggest the exact motivation and economy of a world far removed from them in space and time. They don't understand how a wheel fuctions but can diagram means to build the impossible. They sometimes have the flimsiest or freudian understanding of humanity but believe they understand the thinking of people whose civilization is long gone and left no writing.
We live in a world where doctors can't do math and physicists can't tell a lung from a brain. Schools can't be bothered to teach how to read and write because political correctness has become more important.
A basic understanding of science and its history shows that it has always been wrong. People worship the technology and its priests and handmaidens and have been certain for thousands of years that we were wrong in the past but now we finally know everything. Nevermind that we ourselves can't keep up in any field other than our own narrow specialties and that everything we learn yields two new questions because now science finally knows everything. Nevermind that science itself has proven that we never can know everything.
So part of our world now is that truth tends to be determined by committee. A commitee is as sane as the weakest of its members and as intelligent as the inverse of its average.

Man fears the pyramid, time fears man.
