I have noted myself how science fiction is considerably on the wane, with space fantasy and standard fantasy being the dominant groups. Audiences don't feel the need to analyse any of what they see today. This fits with Jonny's point as the simplest fantasy explanations are more popular because they demand less rational problem analysing from the subject but more credulity, which the masses seem to have in spades.
