We are assuming that there is only a single science available to humans.
This is obviously untrue in light of the fact that the ancients invented agriculture, cities, and left wondrous and "impossible" artefacts. They left artefacts that we can't explain EVEN with our advanced science! This can only exist because the ancients had extensive and advanced knowledge of reality; a science. Few people understand how science works because we have numerous assumptions that are not founded in experiment or science. We believe science works because scientists are so smart and we have technology because because engineers understand reality. These and many other false beliefs underlie our understanding of reality.
Rather than looking for ancient technology and science perhaps we should be trying to find ancient metaphysics. There is necessarily some means that they used to acquire, disseminate, and pass down knowledge over the centuries. For some reason this broke down and was no longer needed or no longer used. Our history and history of science was lost.
Of course this raises many questions. But so long as archaeology looks for people like themselves and science like archaeology we will remain in the dark because this just hasn't worked for two centuries and there's no reason to believe it might work in the future. We must consider ONLY the available evidence and systematically use modern science to gain more evidence and to identify the anomalies which point at the road of progress.
