I agree. No one knows for sure.
Though the majority of people who have looked at it, have notice notches evenly spaced on both sides, running perpendicular from side to side. Grease which has been found on the ledges, along with surface deterioration, running with the length of the ledge.
Most people can deduce from those clues, they were moving stone up through the Gallery.
I say to Thanos5150:

? Let me see if I can understand this. So, no they were not moving (stones) materials through? "They clearly did the opposite". Humm... they were moving stones down through the corridor. OK, So instead of pennies from heaven, we have mystery stones from heaven, making their way downhill. Or, maybe the just ran them up there, so they could turn and run them back down.
The Shadufs are thought provoking. I commend you for that.
