Hopefully this will help you understand.
The Causeway, as I claim, required a polish surface of quality stone. That material has been removed for use elsewhere. It's not that the middle is missing, it's the two platforms on each side, which are missing. You can see part of those in your B&W picture.
A Water Funicular operation, only needs water from a higher source. The Causeway is an Incline Plain. A Simple Machine. They understood how to use water to their advantage.
In this video, it's only water is moving the carriage, and performing the lift. The one carriage, full of people at the bottom, move up to the top. The other carriage, which is now at the bottom, let's their water run out, and the cycle is repeated. Think of the combined weight of the people = 1 stone.
There is no one pulling it up. You on the other hand, would be trying to pull that carriage up, using rope and men. I think I prefer my way, as it is effortless.
