Having a problem understanding a concept taught in elementary school, are we?
It's a Counter Balance. Did you not get to play outside, and throw a rope over a limb with one of your friends, and try and pull him up into the tree? Too many joystick adventures?
I suppose you could be right, they may have been dumb ass stone pullers. Has it occurred to you, they would have encountered the same amount, if not more, friction pulling stones up the causeway and winding ramps? Seems like alot of rigging and work? So, you think men performing the work vs. water performing the work, is somehow less work?
So to answer your question, wouldn't it be easier to just drag the thing... NO, it would not be! Belittling the the concept with "rocket scientist busy computing trajectory and resistance", only reveals your lack of intelligence, and spitefulness.
