if you look at reliefs concerning the afterlife you'll oft notice a little bird like character...

What you see is a conduit between the land of the Living and the Land of the dead
It probably also had a processional purpose
and it may have been employed (somehow) during construction of the Complex.
Of course, if you dispute what we think we know of their beliefs, and dispute what we think we know of their Funerary rituals, fetishes,totems and constructs....
you are taking an extremely 1 dimensional view of a multidimensional Culture.
