Our word "funicular" comes from a word that meant "rope"!
[en.wikipedia.org]
1347b. his forward cable is taken by Isis; his stern cable is seized by Nephthys.
1376a. The ropes are knotted; the boats of N. are tied together.
2080b. the ropes which are on it are made solid
1742b. The ropes are tied, the boats are assembled,
Conceptually a "funicular" is little more than a rope draped over a hill. The cars or boats appended to the ends of the ropes are almost afterthoughts. Once you think of draping the rope your need to lift anything is over if you have the water at the top of the hill to operate the contraption.
I should hardly be surprised the word just means "rope" since there is so much poetry in language and in Ancient Language. The two are so dissimilar this poetry breaks down between them but even our words owe their origin to very distant times when language was like mathematics.
I look forward to all your work. I believe the pyramid builders would recognize some of your scenes.

Man fears the pyramid, time fears man.
