Logic says it's stupid to drag a stone up a steep ramp because it's very hard work just walk up it much less to drag a stone with you. Then common sense would tell any one except a modern person that walking back down the ramp is a huge waste of the effort to get up. WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS? They were not idiots.
Of course they dragged stones straight up the sides but these sides were probably about 70 degrees because they are all five step pyramids. If there is even one pyramid (great or otherwise) that is not five steps then THAT ONE was built by pulling them straight up the finished sides but stones were pulled up EVERY STEP THAT EXISTS ON EVERY PYRAMID.
Working from a nice level surface like a step top is a million times more comfortable and affords infinitely more room that ridiculous and unevidenced ramps. If a man gets tired on a ramp he might die and impede traffic. If he gets tired pulling stones up he can be easily spelled.
It is absolutely ridiculous that Egyptologists still believe in ramps. The solution has been around since 1989 but it wasn't actually seen until Charles Rigano discovered it in June of '06. Egyptology is still refusing to accept the obvious. There is extensive physical and cultural evidence that stones were pulled straight up and it's the only logical means. It is consistent with historical accounts that say the pyramids were built with "mounds" and it is consistent with the architectural evidence as well. Why can't we just quit with ramps already?
I seriously doubt that used much counterweight as you suggest. It is counterproductive. Perhaps a slight counterweight to offset the weight of the equipment would be beneficial but this would force them to either move the weight or use one single conveyance for lifts. And I still don't like 180 degree changesin rope direction (pulleys). This is fine for stones of ten tons or less but not so much for heavy loads. I believe every load was around 20 tons except for the very large ones. Why not just put you up and down sleds on opposite sides of the pyrtamid and eliminate the pulleys?
