I would recommend you read the referenced paper by Lull and Belmonte which would give clarity - in short, yes the same characters turn up in multiple stories and drawings. Lull and Belmonte is an excellent reference.
As for mythology and how story telling develops, I would recommend Lynne Kelly’s “The Memory Code” refer to

I will caveat that Lynne’s book doesn’t deal with Egyptian mythology as such but mythology from a prehistory perspective.
