Let's Substitute confused and unconvincing for hollow and false ideas or theories. Then, give it a go.

If the ideas or theories, upon further examination, can be shown to be hollow and false--we're getting somewhere.

But, chances are, even if we can clear up some of the confusion, they'll still be just unconvincing. They are seldom formulated well enough to achieve hollow and false.
