There has been a lot of discussion of Humphries Brewer over the years, both on GHMB and also on other forums. (Martin Stower, who has already posted on this thread, is one of the authors of Strange Journey, and would doubtless be happy to vouch for the two books' reliability.)

One of Sitchin's ideas was that the Anunnaki had a spaceport on Sinai (dating to some very remote era), and that the Great Pyramid was constructed at an equally remote era as a navigation beacon designed to help spaceships from Planet Nibiru to safely reach the spaceport. Unfortunately for this theory, in 1837 Col. Howard Vyse, an English explorer, discovered crew-names incorporating cartouche names of Khufu (c. 2589–2566 BC), the king commonly accepted as responsible for commissioning the GP. Sitchin therefore suggested that Vyse, anxious for fame and fortune, must have forged Khufu's cartouche names (the only royal cartouche names that appear within the interior of the pyramid), thus opening up the theoretical possibility of a much greater age for the structure. Then, in the early 1980s, a retired Pennsylvania engineer, Walter M. Allen, gave Sitchin to understand that Allen's great-grandfather, Humphries Brewer (1817-1867), had actually witnessed this forgery.

Strange Journey contains a detailed investigation of the whole affair, including documents (some of which are illustrated in the books) from various historical archives.
