The reason why I'm looking at Sitchin is except for that whole planet Nibiru nonsense, I find some resonance of truth in his ideas. Of course, that could just be the truth from the original sources that he hasn't managed to mangle with that planets crashing into each other BS, but that's still truth and useful for what it is.

The reason why the Anunnaki is that they are the best examined ancient culture which I know the least about, giving me the biggest "bang for my buck" as I try to reexamine history in light of my new insight. My previous model for mythology was cribbed from Joseph Campbell, where the gods were essentially Jungian archetypes. Now that I have to switch postulates now that I've sussed out the gods' secret of immortality I have to rework history to incorporate the fact that the gods actually were physically living among mankind in the ancient cities. I need to run through this reexamination before I start to seriously consider what happened to the gods and why they are no longer here.
