I believe many if not most of the glyphs began as logograms; pictures which simply represented their own design. the system was ambiguous and complex so the glyphs came to represent sound of language like our alphabet. For this reason Egyptologists miss most of the "big picture". Without understanding the nature of logograms like the "ankh" they are watching an old silent film without the picture. They are taking it apart frame by frame for study but without the fundamentals they don't understand what order to see the frames. They don't understand that perspective and context are fixed by the author in a language that has fixed meaning for every word.
