Because it is sitting right in front of you is what makes Creighton's contortions all the more entertaining. :)
Seems Creighton's tack is working well to fool you (and who knows how many more). It's all smoke and mirrors. For example, he wants you to think dates can only be written with the numerals rotated (C and -), not vertical (n and |). Secondly, he is trying to do a little magic trick about hieratic conventions, but is not fooling (at least at this point) me nor Martin. Try reading the entire section of Gardiner that Martin linked to in the OP. Also review the footnotes.
An ordinal can be a cardinal, and vice versa. Dates have been written with vertical numerals (n and |). In other words, he thinks he knows about conventions in hieratic, but does not. Key in that he's shown how utterly incompetent he is with hieroglyphs and weigh it against him now presenting himself as some sort of authority on the more rigorous and difficult hieratic. I leave it up to the reader to decide if it is sad or hilarious.
Why not ask Creighton just exactly what his point is? Notice how he is dodging the revelation?
Best,
Avry
