I’d suggest that anyone interested read § 259 of Gardiner’s Egyptian Grammar, here.
“The horizontal position becomes thus associated more with ordinal than with cardinal meaning; in hieratic texts this position is apt to be found in the words for ‘third’, ‘fourth’, etc., . . .”
So emphatically not confined to dates.
One would naturally think of the numbering of the blocks in Campbell’s Chamber as ordinal and in the context of masons’ marks one would expect an abbreviated writing, much as we actually find:
There is nothing wrong with the orientation of the numerals in Campbell’s Chamber.
