It's chemical and comes from the amygdala. We pick and choose friends and lovers based on what makes us feel good. But feelings are not abstractions. You hurt just as much when you get beaten with a brand new two by four but even worse if it's wielded by a friend. Nobody sits down and calculates whether someone is a friend or not. We don't count only the children we love (at least until they are disowned).

While you might perceive your emotions as abstraction, and to some extent everything is an abstraction to Homo Omnisciencis, the reality is that we don't model love we experience it. Animals experience emotion as well. Emotion is part of a digital complex brain and the part of our brain that is the seat of emotion is still digital. Higher brain functions are now programmed by analog language but most of the rest of the brain is still digital. Neurons are either on or off.

Reality exists outside of our brains and this is a concept that we've lost sight of. We can only experience it inside and on inside it must conform to our beliefs.
