Hi Scott,
Good to see you back on this site,
Why paint it sideways ? you ask, well , could it be a simple matter of running out of room if it was painted horizontally, im not sure of the exact dimensions of the block and cartouche but when the painter, (who ever that was) looked at the width of that block he may have thought there might not be enough room for the cartouche and the follower's word, whereas turning it upside down as you term it would give them all the room they needed , as it would seem they began their painting from the bottom going up.
As for its timescale for when it got put on, at this moment in time im open to both scenarios, its a modern fake, or its an old fake, i say old fake because it may be the Khufu gang were the last of the workers to get in there, maybe 20 years or more after the initial work began, and this Khufu guy finished of the build under some sort of Co-regent deal with another king of that day , who knows, so maybe not so much an ancient fake more one of a later adoption by the guys who finished the work.
I think it plausible considering by the time they got above Campbell's chamber a good 25 to 30 years must have gone by from when the plan was drawn up, how many years was taken up with building all the canals and boats to carry all those massive stones , where are the boats that carry 60 tonnes , at least show me the drawings of these massive boats, so yea still some very awkward questions that need to be answered, but you still need thousands of people to build a complex like Giza, and i havent seen any evidence of a pre existing society with those requirements needed to do a Giza , so it looks like the 4th Dynasty time is the correct time for G1's inception.

Judge for yourself. would you have put it horizontally , or upright, was there enough room, put yourself in the shoes of the painter, (assuming one believes of an in situ application).
