In terms of 'blackness' or 'whiteness' (tonal rendition).
Different types of photo film emulsion over decades of technical development.
Also these images have at some time in the recent past been digitally scanned for the internet. Which is another variable that has advanced enormously in a just a few years, but there are ways around that.
