Reverse engineering the pyramid in terms of "The Rituals of Ascension" (Pyramid Texts) suggests a minimum of three functions.
These were as air shafts, passage for brake actuators, and a third indeterminate one probably related to the movement of a gas or liquid. They wouldn't hold much pressure because of the way they were designed.
