Ancient Language had the same natural logic as mathematics which was imparted by the wiring of the human brain. Since is was "mathematical" in nature it was soluble within a mathematical (logical) framework. I didn't know this when I started. At that time I was merely trying to figure out what the author was thinking when he wrote. Much to my surprise the more often I read it the more word definitions were becoming apparent. This was when I began realizing that the language was distinct from any language today. They never really "said" anything at all but rather they framed their thoughts in terms of natural law as determined by their simple axioms and observation in terms of the "math" of language. It's a very simple science and was highly effective for some things. Of course they didn't know it was science at all because the axioms were as fundamental as the wiring of the brain and they couldn't see the nature of the language in which they thought. They knew it was logical but they didn't know it was metaphysical because of all its properties.
I've presented this a million times and it has never worked so I'm going to try something a little different this time. I'm going to emphasize the process used to solve it rather than the actual words. Solving the PT was like solving thousands of simultaneous equations. The only thing that made it possible is that modern science has made it possible to identify and quantify the "variables". I used search engines and wiki to find the characteristics of phenomena and living things. These "characteristics" are like the "names" that the ancients used to define everything.
With simultaneous equations the results of one equation must fit each of the others. The same is true of EVERY WORD in the PT. No word can have more than a single meaning.
2110b. ’Iḫ.t-wt.t, thou art not enveloped by the earth.
Here we see that (like the dead king) ’Iḫ.t-wt.t is not enveloped by the earth. logically this implies sometimes it is enveloped by the earth (just as a dead king might be). Remember this isn't English where any statement can be made; this couldn't even be said if it weren't true. ’Iḫ.t-wt.t IS NOT ENVELOPED BY THE EARTH.
2110c. Thy fame is by day; thy fear is by night, as a god, lord of f ear.
Here we see that this thing is a big curiosity by day but is dangerous (fear inspiring) at night. Again this is DANGEROUS AT NIGHT or they couldn't say it. Anyone can use English and say CO2 can't flow and they're just wrong. But I3.t-wt.t is definitively, by definition, dangerous at night. It couldn't even be said otherwise.
2110d. Thou commandest the gods like the mighty one, chief of the mighty.
I3.t-wt.t "commands" (directs) natural processes or phenomena. It leads them. It causes them. It Commands them. This language wasn't like English. It commands phenomena that are "mighty". It is true. It is factual.
2111. [O] Osiris, the overflow comes, the inundation hastens, Geb groans.
This could suggest that this phenomena is the inundation that tosses on the Giza Plateau. Indeed, it does appear to be exactly this inundation that "comes to the uplands as osiris".
2113. O N., [the inundation comes 1, [the overflow hastens], Geb [groans].
It is quite possibly I3.t-wt.t causing this inundation.
2114a. Exult in the divine efflux which is in thee; let thy heart live;
Here we see the suggestion that I3.t-wt.t is "enveloped" by osiris. Osiris is commanded by CO2. The efflux of the natural phenomenon is CO2. "efflux" is used because it's not the subject of the sentence. While every word had one meaning every thing had three words and it's the choice of which category of words used that determined the meaning of sentence.
Again all of this by necessity must agree with every other word in the PT. Many things helped in solving the meaning and certainly other defining characteristics were provided for CO2 in many other utterances and even in other sources like the Coffin Texts. There are hundreds of clues from a sample of this gas being saved at Giza per CT # 1080 (the sealed thing put in Giza since it fell from osiris) to the admonition to tiptoe and hurry (or not stumble) on the horizon. It is associated with bread in the PT. It is suggested it is emitted from the eye of horus. (Osiris N., take to thyself the odour of the eye of Horus, like the eye of Horus, which he traced by its odour.)
You must remember that the concept of the "eye of horus" must fit with the concept of CO2. If anywhere in the text it said something like "the efflux of osiris is before the arm of nut" the entire theory would be trashed. The arm of nut is the well and the eye of horus its opening. It's impossible for osiris to precede the arm.
This technique would work even on modern language but not so effectively. However if it were modern language we could all understand it and no technique would be necessary.
Ultimately it is the ancients speaking in the words of the gods who are the sole determinant of the meaning. I am defining how these words of the gods work in as goodda English as I can.
One of the reasons people are having trouble with this is people don't understand what they know. They don't even understand why they understand what they do. They have no clue about metaphysics or how science works so they just tend to accept anything labeled science nd dismiss everything else. I have to imagine a lot of people are watching this and waiting for Egyptologists to give it their seal of approval. Anyone should be able to see it is more logical and fact based than the paradigm. Everyone's heard about "ramps" their whole life and everyone is comfortable at the crown of creation and no one wants to get dethroned.
There's nothing really wrong with Mercer's translation except he didn't understand the meaning of what he was translating. If he had the translation would be far smoother but putting all of it into English would have been quite difficult. We owe Mercer a great debt for leaving us with a translation we can read, is free, accurate, and is searchable.
