the lack of stability to which you are referring is the reason why the adze was considered superior to the chisel and hammer
note:( in my personal experience I was in awe of using an adze when I began my apprenticeship. It took a lot of practise to become comfortable and accurate with a 'D" adze, before working with a long handled one. But I leaned how to plane a surface flat with that tool)
as to your example...the modern drill press is far superior to a hand held drill
the basic principles do not change
