That's exactly my take on the iconic inscriptions and paintings we see in some Dynastic tombs such as Djehotihotep, Rekhmire, and the causway of Unis. These pictoral representations seem to not be representative of actual events as much as they support the notion that much of that stonework already was there and ancient when the Dynastics arrived on the scene, and those Egyptians spent their lives attempting to explain all that stonework. It's like our own versions of biblical Creation, Noah, angels, Santa Claus, ghosts, etc. Just stories made up either as an attempt to reconcile the otherwise unfathomable or that had at one time been more accurate to the actual event but which became distorted beyond recognition after many generations of verbal propagation of concepts that became more and more foreign to each subsequent generation.
