Hi Willie and ALL
I was really wishing to reply to "Harte" (good username) but I can't find his original post.
I am wondering whether Harte has actually read and studied Denys Stocks book?
The online copy we had approx one year ago has now been taken down does anyone know of a site to read and post excerpts?
Yes Stocks managed to put some small, shallow, very inprecise rough cuts in granite.
However, if one studies his tabulated results the cuts are so insignificant (maximum depth approx 3cm) that he does NOT prove elaborate detailed precise carving can be achieved using the methods he (and Archae) dreamt up!
I have managed to replicate even shallower cuts but I cheated and used a modern hand wound drill press, slow electric drill and had to chisel out a perfectly circular start grove first and local river sand didn't work so got some amount of fancy grades of lapidary cutting paste .
Why Mr Stocks did not achieve anything significant is easily understood once someone attempts to replicate it.
Firstly he didn't have enough time neither would the AE! using his fantasy method! They would still be there, hard at it cursing in hieroglyphics, and amongst a huge pile of rejects!
Secondly, the copper loss is very expensive and AE would have been way ahead it they just cast a shiny copper vase and left it at that!
Now on my coffee table I have a wax candle . It is approx 4 inch diameter and 10inch high. Lovely scent! You can buy them cheap at those chinese import shops (we call 'em two dollar shops here)
Now how about Mr "harte" and Archae obtain one and try and develop tools to produce the interior carved shape shown in the cut vase posted by Archae. I reckon get some old cutlery (spoons knifes and forks) (no heating of impliments allowed) Give it a go hey???.... the first one to achieve it .. will be declared the champion?!!!
Stocks proved NOTHING!
Show me a vase out of basalt or granite made in Manchester UK by D A Stocks! ..anyone?
