Hi Avery,

Quote
That is, the story is purely allegorical, i.e. no tower actually exists.

My position hasn't changed.

In the Apocryphon of John, describing the Demiurge, Yaldabaoth (Yahweh):

"When he gazed upon his creation surrounding him
He said to his host of demons
The ones who had come forth out of him:
“I am a jealous God and there is no God but me!”

In Exodus 34:14, it is said of Yahweh,

"For you shall worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:"

Therefore, is it any wonder that Yahweh becomes indignant when he realises that humans have reached a capability level equal to his own and with the possibilty of going beyond. He decides to limit any progress towards this achievement - "now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them..."

But is this account to be taken literally?

Firstly, humans say, "“Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens."

How is that going to place them on an equal footing? How high could builders of that time construct a building probably made of mudbrick?

Yahweh is also unhappy about the one language - "“Indeed the people are one and they all have one language..." But the first humans all spoke the same language in the beginning, so why would this have been a problem at that time?

And how is confusing the language going to prevent future generations of whatever language grouping together and rebuilding a similar edifice? Even today there are many of the "scattered ones" capable of constructing a building higher than the Tower.

The account doesn't make sense if taken literally.

The Tower of Babel story is allegorical.

The "city" is the Body. The "tower" is the Head. Humans had received knowledge of the way to be released from the control of Yahweh. The AoJ says ;

"Yaldabaoth modeled his creation
On the pattern of the original realms above him
So that it might be just like the indestructible realms.

He named those sevenfold Powers starting with the highest one.

Each has its own realm modeled on one of the higher realms.
And each new name refers to a glory in the heavens
So that Yaldabaoth’s demons might be destroyed."

Compare the "seven heavens" with what are referred to as chakras in Ancient Eastern mysticism. The first heaven is Understanding. The highest heaven is the crown of the head.

Yes, it appears that a Divine Spark had been lit at that time. Mastery within each "heaven" will eventually provide transcendence then release.

How could Yaldabaoth/Yahweh - that jealous god - possibly allow this?

He "confused the languages." Somehow, our receptivity to the word of the true God at that time was reduced to the extent that eventually the path to enlightenment became either unknown or, if it remained, the knowledge went underground.

Further Exodus 20:5 says, regarding genetic amnesia :

"...punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me."

So, it appears that, within us, is a seven level battleground. One should take care if playing with matches.
