Vinalhaven Maine Granite quarries 200 years ago, gallamander to move it, steel tools to cut carve, and shape. There is a picture in a historical society book up there that shows a poor immigrant in the middle of a field on the island banging away on a hunk of granite. No shelter from the weather, if they got hurt, too bad. Carved rock sent on ships up and down the east coast to adorn all types of buildings. Steel tools, the proper method applied, and works of art are made.
Today we can use diamond abrasives and make fast work of granite. The difficult part is holding the diamonds and keeping them cool so they don't come loose from the tool. There is no reason a metal saw blade with diamonds attached could not have been made and cooled with water.
