Petrie was well aware of the problems associated with so called "Sequential" mensuration, as is anyone schooled in surveying or fabrication or manufacturing or construction.
However we must note that Petrie used long rods to measure a pre-existing tunnel. This does not explain how the proposed path of the tunnel was projected into the uncut solid rock by the builders with such a remarkable degree of accuracy.
