I have a theory as to why the Egyptians built their pyramids where they did. I believe their position dictated their height. Their size was therefore not random, but a necessity dictated by the mechanism of their function.
To be VERY brief...they needed line of sight with the temple at Heliopolis. Khafre's is taller to suit this end (in order to see over Khufu's), and Menkaure's is offset in order to minimize size while still maintaining function. Khufu's is so tall because the height was necessary to "see" over the natural outcropping of rock that the Citadel now sits upon. The alignments and topographical data all checks out. Play with it in google-earth.
Later pyramids bypassed this requirement by including a Sun Temple as a proxy for the Temple of Re at Heliopolis.
Working on publishing the theory, but I have a lot of other projects on the go as well.
