Not so much the sudden drop in temps but each of these are followed by a rapid rise in temperature. As Dr. Schoch theorizes this may be due to solar flares. At the time of YD the northern hemisphere cooled while the southern (New Zealand, Southeast Atlantic and parts of South America, as Schoch points out), actually showed a warming trend. I would support the impact hypothesis for this period leading to YD as Randall Carlson has pointed out and has demonstrated the evidence there in Washington State (I've seen it first hand and spent 12 years in the area) in the Lake Missoula Flood, Walluwa Gap and Dry Falls. ] To produce the volume of concretion that carved through volcanic layers that is evident didn't come on gradually over thousands of years of erosion, and this wasn't the only regional flooding going on at the same time, this particular event pinpointed over the ice cap consisting of 2 mile thick ice sheet isn't going to show a crater. I also believe this wasn't the only area of impact, but suggest that an off shore Bolide collision occurred off shore west of Bolivia, Chile and Argentina coast at this time. I think the warming may be attributed to the possible flares, of which there is no historic evidence, only speculation. Following an impact millions of tons of debris is cast into the atmosphere resulting in an insolated blanket that retains more of the suns radiation. When it cleared after an epoch period of time the earth cooled. Just like our weather in winter. When a cloud layer forms the temperatures rise, and when the skies are clear more heat escapes and a cooling trend comes upon us. But flare would help to explain the rapid warming prior to the cooling, whether impact or otherwise. But this single event has timing going for it and the evidence by volume reflects the abrupt change in temperature. And the cataclysmic explanation would certain support the evacuation of human existence and the disappearance of the large species of animal we see only in Africa today. As I have asked before, how would you explain the fact that while the Aztec, Mayan and Inca were so advanced in areas of astrology, written language (even books) and advanced architectural design and the North American 1st Nations were still living in the Stone Age leading right up to the period of the European invasion? North America was wiped clean by this event. Further, instrumentation can show variances, interpretation of less obvious readings of epoch events, and a stringent reluctance to stray from the "accepted" sciences of this period can all contribute to the "blinder" accounting of evidence and another dangerous habit of "back shelving" artifacts and evidence. Handcock has given us vocationalists a place to stir up the mud and avoid filtering so much out of what is there. Do I believe, based on the charts you've presented, that all the cooling was due to impacts? That would be pretty blind on my part to rule out anything, when "anything" is possible in this world. What do you think? We can only make this topic richer by opening our minds. Mankind depends on these lessons to survive.
I like to remember the story of Ralph Ring's experience in the lab supported by government funding, that "we aren't paid to solve anything, we are paid to only try to solve something".
