The black mat is in conjunction with a catastrophic event causing mass extinctions. It is not yet connected with Siberian mammoths because Siberia is not yet the subject of a scientific study, so far as I know. The Siberian mammoths are connected with a catastrophic event of which there is evidence. Whether it was the same event that caused the black mat has been raised by Firestone, West and Smith.
The Cycle of Cosmic Catastrophes
We found iron micrometeorites embedded in a bison skull and the tusks of mammoths from Alaska and Siberia. Are these magnetic radioactive grains evidence for a cosmic catastrophe?
Their book goes into detail of micrometeorites in relation to the black mat.
> You can't just say "black mat" and think you've
> covered it.
> Or can you?
The black mat is just one piece of evidence for a cosmic impact. There is much more.
> Can you explain how an impact event can cause
> instantaneous freezing?
No I cannot, I'm not a scientist. All I can do is tell you what they say. In the theory of a supernova explosion creating dust ball comets put forth by Firestone, West and Smith, they describe the results of impacts as they see it. The description is lengthy spanning several pages. I don't like to do this but I will give the part relevant to freezing with their detailed explanation of the mechanisms involved. I will have to break it up in order to shorten their description of a bombardment by dust ball comets. This bombardment caused much more havoc than just freezing, according to them.
Across upper parts of North America and Europe, the immense energy from the multiple impacts blew a series of ever-widening giant overlapping bubbles that pushed aside the atmosphere to create a near vacuum inside.....
Behind the expanding edge of the bubble, Earth was stripped of the protective shield of the atmosphere and was at the mercy of a different barrage. The enormous blast ejected tiny, fast-moving grains in all directions through the thin air.....
The particle onslaught struck mammoths and larger animals that could not find shelter, lodging in their tusks or horns and sinking deep into their eyes and flesh.....
Before long, the outward push of the shock wave slowed and stopped, and then the vacuum began to draw the air backward. As the expanded atmosphere rushed back toward the impact site, the bubbles collapsed, sucking white-hot gasses and dust inward at tornado speeds and then channeling them up and away from the ground.
The raging updraft through the hollow bubbles created an equally powerful downdraft of frigid high-altitude air, traveling at hundreds of miles per hour. With temperatures exceeding 150 degrees F below zero, the downward stream of air hit the ground and radiated out from the blast site in all directions, flash freezing within seconds everything it touched.
Here is a paper by 25 scientists reporting evidence of a "Younger Dryas cooling". This report covers North America & Europe, which is the area they've gathered data from. I don't know if they plan to expand their investigation to other countries in the future.
