The Altiplano is a desert. The area around lake Titicaca averages 800 mm per annum. Other areas receive as little as 200mm. Also, on the Altiplano are salt lakes, not small ones. Salar de Uyuni spreads over 4,086 sq miles, which is approx. 100 times the size of the Bonneville Salt Flats in the USA. At several metres in depth in places, that's a lot of salt. From where?
Approx. 30,000 to 42,000 years ago, these salt lakes were part of one large lake. The most recent reading for formation (Coipasa) was radiocarbon dated to 11,500 to 13,400 years ago. This lake is now salt lake Poopo (claimed by some as having connections with Atlantis).
Puma Punku and Tiwanaku are covered by, in some cases, metres of mud and earth which looks to be the result of an inundation. Where could all this water have come from in a desert environment?
Flood waters. Thousands of square miles of salt. And research shows that much of Puma Punku is still buried. This wasn't an underground complex. It simply got buried by a flood of sea water and destroyed.
