Do you perchance know anything else about this photo than that it's rotated?
I can only speculate that these nilometers are replacements for originals. Elephantine Island being just below the First Cataract would have experienced a rush of water when the Nile was in flood unlike a gradual rising further downstream and in the Delta.
Maybe the torrents damaged the originals or tore them off. The markers in stone still remain. I'm not sure how the metal ones measure by the geometric pattern.
Below is another shot of the stairway leading down to the Nile. It appears that there was a lot of water at times. Thanks for your interest.
PS I'm not sure why anyone would state that the top shot was misrepresented, when I clearly stated that it had been rotated 90 degrees.
