Its already been done in a christmas episode of South Park in which not only Jesus ends up in Iraq with an M16 - so does Santa. I don't think Santa should be represented in this way....

Its seems that the New South Wales police don't see it that way - see link. I applaud your diplomacy but I grew up in Lakemba where these gangs come from and the reality there wasn't as polite as your viewpoint.

Steve - in relation to the code of conduct comment, I want to personally acknowledge that it is not the entire minority group causing the problem, nor is it the entire Australian population reacting in an inappropriate way to the problem. There are people with the best of intentions on both sides of this, I guess what the international media seemed to do however, was to not acknowledge that there

Steve - I am sorry if I sounded arrogant. Its an upsetting topic and I am bowing out. I just became drawn in because I grew up in Bankstown and have seen and experienced a lot in that demographic and I know the problem is definitely a two way street. Some posters are provocative and try and paint Australians as racist yobs which in this particular scenario is a totally inadequate assessment. Also

What David quotes is true. I say this on behalf of the victims of the savage crimes committed by these gangs who targeted and continue to target Australian women. One young woman was abducted and raped 25 times and the perpetrators sat in court laughing - the motivation was racial. If you haven't lived in that part of Sydney and sensed the hatred from certain elements of the minority group in qu

An interesting approach which is being promoted on both sides of the conflict and publicised in the media here is to actively get mothers involved in speaking to their sons about these racial issues and trying to cool them down and keep them away from the violence. The strict laws do concern me as I never really wanted to live in a police state.

Lebanon used to be known as the Paris of the middle east. When growing up in the Arabic area of Sydney our family friends were Lebanese christians - the Arabic Muslims unfortunately wouldn't mix with us or we could have learnt a lot more about the country. A lot of Lebanese people who fled to Australia had suffered a lot because they had come from a war zone. Many had lost relatives. Most of the

In response to Lee's blog, the problem doesn't start with the prime minister because this has been brewing since the 1970s. Now that the discord has reached this level hopefully community leaders and politicians will come to the table and sort it out.

If you want to know what is really going on, this blog from the main Sydney paper provides a more accurate commentary of the situation and a wide cross section of opinions. I hate to see my beautiful city like this.

The reactor was my first thought too, when I heard the term 'catastrophic' used. The nuclear reactor has already been a target - remember when a plot was discovered just before the Sydney Olympics and some people were arrested in New Zealand.

PR - they won't 'get deported' - from what I have read in the media, they are Australian Citizens, most of whom were born and raised here.

Lee, VG has been provocative and admits to "pressing buttons" in order to gain other's perspectives. VG has succeeded. There were strong racial inferences in those posts and I can see where Indy was coming from. There are people who live in Australia who have chips on there shoulders, even at an academic level, who demonise the old anglo-celtic Australians. I actually dropped out of a

Playing Devil's advocate here - may be the risk of 'terrorism' in our country is much greater than we dare think - may be we don't know half of it, or then again may be we are all being duped! Divide and conquer...

Yes that would be nice.... Anyway, I think Don's thread has been hijacked and we should get back to his original statements.

I am going to quote an Australian Aboriginal author called Philip McLaren from his novel 'There'll be New Dreams' first published in 2001. I think this topic deserves an Aboriginal voice. All of his characters are Aboriginal. The following extract refers to "a simple ballot (which) was to pose the question as to whether or not Australians ought to allow Aborigines onto the national census; t

ok - I've taken the bait. In response to Vajra Guru, in stating that aboriginal people are still segregated and exploited today, that is absolute rubbish. Have you ever been to Australia, or do you have your own agenda? How are aboriginal people exploited? Personally I have a lot of empathy for our aboriginal people and the effects of the policies of past governments. Having said that if we loo

What a race it was! What a beautiful and spirited horse is Makybe Diva. We certainly watched something special today. (I think the first Melbourne Cup was in 1861)

I heard, Tony Abbott say that there might even come a point where interstate travel was restricted. The comment was made in the context of fears of avian flu but I wondered it was just another manifestation of the police state we seem to be heading towards. Yes, I think prayers are in order.

I must say Martin, if I were younger I would be OS working in a bar. Are you Australian? I know what you mean about the 'outback'. I had a small stint teaching in the country and I would never live in rural australia again. I had no idea how to communicate with these people. It was like living in the 1950s. Anyway, the fact that these new laws are supposedly needed is very disturbing.

Its been deleted from the Australian Newspaper sites too. It was there yesterday. There remains similar articles but not the one with that particular comment at the end. I did a few searches. Its been replaced by articles with comments from Steve Bracks.

Look - seriously I am as disturbed as the next person that Melbourne was mentioned as a possible target. It makes one feel like a sitting duck. There's no easy solution is there? Our freedom and western lifestyle is abhorrant to some and that seems to be the bottom line. We can't all head for the hills as tempting as it might be but just have to get on with it.

I've lived in Melbourne for 10 years but grew up in Sydney which I prefer and miss. I have often been told by native Melbournians that Melbourne was mainly settled by second sons i.e. the ruling class and Sydney by convicts. Of course Melbourne and Sydney competed for the title of Capital City. Both lost and Canberra was built half way between. Melbourne sees itself as very establishment, very ru

"If you need to take this, it just says something about your character, spirituality, and spiritual development IMO, and I don't feel hesitant or like it's not my place to say this" Why don't you read some medical literature before making ridiculous comments. Character and spiritual development have nothing to do with having low levels of certain neurotransmitters and the debilitating
