Some people secrete abnormally high levels of insulin and put on weight without having to eat much at all. Some people have undiagnosed adrenal or pituitary tumours which cause bloating and weight gain - not as uncommon as once thought (cushings), some people have hypothyroidism, pcos or other hormonal imbalances which predispose one to weight gaine etc. Racism is outlawed so lets bash the fattie

I must say that I have found the comments of David and the other posters very helpful and stimulating. I haven't been very active in participating in the dialogue because I am quite a novice in regards to this topic and the tangential sub topics, but I personally admire a bit of conviction based on personal experience even if the experience is totally subjective. I think it is brave and generous

I have just caught up on this thread. Thanks for the links Raja - I always seem to be saying that. Thanks to everyone else for the debate. It has certainly given me a lot to think about and others too I am sure. Julietta

Someone told me that if a dying person has a pacemaker, then their heart keeps beating after death, they just stop breathing and become white and cold. Has anyone heard of this before?

Thanks for the interesting links and comments. David - I found your comment about the day of our death being set in stone particularly interesting, and the implications that even if we learn to astral travel we are safe, as unless it is our time to go we will return to our bodies anyway. I wish I could have one of these experiences while meditating. I have only ever left my body while dreamin

I have never experienced astral travelling, but would be interested to know how to do it? Also, how does one ensure they return? If they don't return, is this the same as dying? Strange questions, I know, but I am sure there are some spiritual people here who have experience with these things. J.

Yes - I am hoping for reincarnation and another chance to avoid dumb choices. I think dreams often involve leaving the body. Perhaps death is like that type of dream state except with more clarity as we won't then be bound to the physical.

Thank you for these links. The Rosary is such a lovely and powerful meditative prayer. There is also another meditative prayer that can be said on rosary beads - 'The Chaplet of the Divine Mercy'. It has been authorised to a certain level by the Catholic Church.

For the last few weeks I have been in physical pain and mental anguish over the nature of an odd medical condition that is as yet unresolved. The only way I have been able to cope mentally is to live moment to moment. To take on any amount of the past or any possibilities of future experience is to much for me at the moment. For years I have been into tarot cards, fortune tellers and all of that,

Claude, we used to sing 'Lord of the Dance' at Catholic school, though some of the words had been changed to reflect the Christ story - it is definitely the same song though and I always loved it.

Just adding to Claude's point, apparently Yung said that the declaration of The Assumption by the Catholic Church last century was the most important shift in archetypes in contempary times because it re-empowered the feminine. The assumption is the taking of Mary into heaven body and soul. As for these statues, who knows?

There is a saying that I learnt of only a few years ago which has inspired me. "Use the talents you possess, For the woods would be very silent, If no birds sang except the best" I believe it is a traveller/gypsy saying. I only ever wanted to participate in anything if I was very good at it, but this saying has changed my perspective a little.

Ask yourself the question. If you were swimming around in the water and it was your natural habitat why would you want to leave it knowing that leaving the water would kill you and your offspring. The answer is simple - they must be suffering and the overriding impulse is to do what it takes to stop the immediate suffering it i.e. remove themselves from that environment even if a future conseque

Not an Academy Award but may be of interest to some:- "Colour production came to Australia with the 1955 Charles Chauvel film Jedda, still one of the most debated films ever produced in Australia. It was a daring film, not only was it the first Australian produced film to be shot in colour but it was also the first to use Aboriginal actors in lead roles and the first to feature at the prest

Thankyou for filling in the gaps and clarifying so eloquently. I think the distinction you make is an important one and I am more than happy to take it on board. When I made my posts I meant the English Parliament and law makers but perhaps that wasn't clear.

Here's some more:- These are from readings for a uni course. I believe the reading is from the Attorney-General's department's website. "The Australian Constitution was passed as part of a British Act of Parliament in 1900, and took effect on 1 January 1901. A British Act was necessary because before 1900 Australia was merely a collection of six self-governing British colonies and ultimate

Hi Lovejoy, I don't know why you need to get petty and personal (I'll resist the temptation to profile you in return) but everything I have said is historically true. I am sick of people here trying to paint Australian's as racist for this and that. Obviously Australia as a nation has to take some responsibility for the Aboriginal injustice but I think it needs to be remembered that the first A

I think I know what you are getting at. There was a terrible shooting in Australia at Port Arthur about eight years ago and heaps of people died. A young guy just went crazy with a gun and apparently he was very difficult to profile. Port Arthur is a ruin of an old penal settlement where the worst convicts were sent and they were treated very badly. Its supposedly haunted. I remember thinking at

I must say you mix in interesting circles. I don't know much about all of this, just studied a few legal and literature subjects last year. Many of the universities make sure that where appropriate their subjects have at least some content relating to Aboriginal issues, so at tertiary level there is an increasing awareness of these issues and this wasn't always the case. I am playing devil's ad

Unfortunately "Indigenous children have been forcibly separated from their families and communities since the very first days of the European occupation of Australia. Violent battles over rights to land, food and water sources characterised race relations in the nineteenth century. Throughout this conflict Indigenous children were kidnapped and exploited for their labour. Indigenous children

It is a shocking problem. The political/legal/social trend here is for Aboriginal self-determination and customary law but the bottom line is that child abuse is unacceptable, there actually is no excuse for this and the sooner the Federal Government intervenes the better. The Northern Territory Government obviously hasn't addressed the problem adequately and most Australians are disgusted.

Ok - I have answered my own question with the help of Wilkipedia:- there is certainly some interesting symbolism involved in this and the list of current members, which also includes individuals from all over the world which have had the honour bestowed on them by Denmark, is very interesting.

Speaking of Denmark, since the publicity surrounding the marriage of Fred and Mary, I have been wondering what the ancient order of the elephant is all about. On certain occasions it involves wearing a sash with an elephant trinket hanging off it. I might do a bit of an internet search but perhaps someone here knows more about it. The more I learn and read about Denmark, the more fascinated I bec

A reminder that it isn't about an entire ethnicity, rather just a minority of a certain ethnicity who have formed very destructive gangs. I choose to believe its a minority anyway.
