Hi John, why do you think that the word science has to either be or refer to a “thing”. I am confused by the primacy you seem to apply to the word “thing.” Why. couldn’t the word “science” simply refer to what scientists do or the knowledge they develop?

Thanks Ray. Would you say that cognitive neuroscience is wrong, really wrong, right or really right?

“my specialty area of interest, cognitive science, and related fields of interest went through an undeniable revolution while I was a doctoral student.” Thanks Ray. Has this revolution resulted in a new paradigm in your mind?

“The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (SSR) was originally printed as an article in the International Encyclopedia of Unified Science, published by the logical positivists of the Vienna Circle. In this book, Kuhn argued that science does not progress via a linear accumulation of new knowledge, but undergoes periodic revolutions, also called "paradigm shifts" (although he did not coin

“In Lindsay's post modern world, Religion is meaningless ritual, ripe for exploitation, and a sense of Social Justice makes those rituals come alive with excitement and purpose. The transition is almost inevitable in a post civil rights empowered country. If we accept Lindsay's post modern foundation, I can even see how the model works conceptually, but the real test is the real world--and the mo

QuotePete revealed Also, I am not religious. Nevertheless, 69% of atheists identified as Democrats. That is not irrelevant. If this is the case Pete, I suggest your argument should be “A conservative poster thinks Democrats are turning politics into a religion. An a non-religious person this scares me. Do you folks think that turning politics into a religion is a bad idea as I do?” Th

QuoteSusan stated That is impossible anyway, since one *side* has some objective facts to study, the other *side* has not. Sorry to remind you Susan, but no one cares about objective facts! Remember I did a post “Who cares about objective facts?” months ago and hardly anyone responded. Unless they are paid to do so, people just don’t care. People care about what is meaningful to them. Ray, we know things are out there because to touch them, we have to move closer and actually touch them. The house across the street is 2 minutes walk from my recliner! The brain has done all the calculations from time immemorial. We compare what we see with what we can touch, hear, smell, etc.we’re building models all the time. You are right Ray, it is amazing.

QuoteGerda stated We must assume that the house across from you is. True, but if you were in town, you could see it for yourself. I don’t see that as a big admission. The same when you tell of us of your house and garden. Does everything change so fast that you have to grab hold of it right now to accept its “isness?” I don’t think so but each person has their own ideas about it. Quote

“He simply restates the same idea in different language.“ Brian, Shapiro is trying to hypnotize you with bull. Just turn it off and forget it. I listened for 2 minutes and then noticed some hilarious SNL Jeopardy skits. A much better use of time I suggest.

Yeah Dean, I don’t know what you are talking about. You must be a lot closer to this world than I am. But I don’t know if that is what Pete wants to talk about in this post. You may want to ask him, unless of course, your argument is that the culture of drag queens resembles a religious structure. That I wouldn’t know.

QuoteTom stated Reality is, in whole true fact, moving all of the time. Nature is moving all the time. Reality is a sub-set of Nature. The house across the street was painted a couple of years ago. Otherwise it has not changed much or moved. A house, is a house, is a house, even though it is composed of elementary particles, which, indeed, are always moving. Quote2. To name Everything

QuoteRay stated I accept that somehow, reality is a phenomenal extension of mind--but not mind is an extension of reality. I suppose that phenomenal reality and objective reality are different. In these two sentences Ray, it become quite clear the need for “definitions!” I take phenomenal reality to be the reality that our 5 senses present to our brains. Studies have shown that our eyes
